[yes] = edge of the crown [not] = interior

 thinning:

Tree Thinning provides an even distribution of branches throughout the crown of a tree. This can increase wind and sun penetration which in turn reduces wind resistance and promotes stronger structure. Proper thinning maintains the crown shape along the outer edge, not the interior branches. Removing interior and lower branches (lion tailing) is not healthy for a tree and has negative affects, like wind damage, reduced branch taper, increased loads on branch unions and weak branch structure.
